Pre-launch proposal · Broome, Western Australia

Broome needs a wheelchair-accessible taxi. The demand already exists.

Wheely Good Rides is a pre-launch proposal to establish a locally owned, wheelchair-accessible transport service for Broome. The documented transport gap, Damian's previous business experience and his lived understanding provide a strong foundation. A suitable vehicle and the required authorisations are the remaining pieces.

Right now, Broome has zero wheelchair-accessible taxis.

INDEPENDENTLY REPORTED

This isn't just our opinion.

ABC News reported that Broome has no operational wheelchair-accessible taxi — independent confirmation of the transport gap Wheely Good Rides is being built to fill.

The proposed vehicle

The missing piece — a work-ready WAV.

A suitable wheelchair-accessible vehicle is being sourced for the launch. The target is a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with a certified wheelchair-accessible conversion. Final wheelchair positions and seated-passenger capacity will depend on the selected vehicle's approved configuration. Options are being evaluated across WA and interstate. Authorisations to be obtained before launch.

The selected vehicle will require a certified wheelchair-accessible conversion. Lift or ramp type, wheelchair positions, restraint systems and final seated-passenger capacity will be confirmed before purchase and publication.

Built in Broome, from the ground up

Proven local business experience. Lived understanding.

Staff at peak — built from two tools

Damian and his late wife started their previous cleaning and gardening business with one mower and a whipper snipper. Through dependable service and hard work, they grew it to employ 14 people and serve homes, businesses and community clients across Broome. The business later ceased during an overwhelming family health crisis. Wheely Good Rides represents Damian rebuilding his life and bringing that same determination to a service Broome genuinely needs.

20+ years

Living and working in Broome

More than two decades in Broome have given Damian a practical understanding of the town, its distances, its people and the importance of reliable local service. Wheely Good Rides is being built from that experience, while new transport-specific relationships and service agreements will be developed openly as the proposal progresses.

Why this matters personally

During the final year of his late wife's life, Damian supported her as a wheelchair user. He experienced firsthand that accessible transport is about much more than getting from one address to another — it affects medical care, independence, dignity and the ability to remain connected with everyday life. Wheely Good Rides combines that lived understanding with proven business experience.

As reported by ABC News

"There are currently no accessible taxis in Broome, and just one local operator providing the service in the wider Kimberley region." — ABC News, 3 March 2026. The national broadcaster independently confirmed what the community already knows: Broome has zero wheelchair-accessible taxis, and the only WAV in the entire Kimberley is 220km away in Derby. The DTMI has identified Broome as a high-priority regional location without an operational wheelchair-accessible taxi service.

Why Broome needs this

A genuine gap in essential transport, not a guess.

Local residents who use wheelchairs currently have no dedicated on-demand option for medical appointments, social outings, or daily errands. The lack of an operational wheelchair-accessible taxi can make hospital discharge, appointments, everyday errands and community participation much harder for wheelchair users and their families. This isn't a convenience gap — it's an essential service that doesn't exist.

More than a ride

Wheely Good Rides isn't just for medical visits.

The first WAV will prioritise wheelchair bookings. Additional vehicles will be added when recorded demand supports expansion. It's not a policy — it's the whole reason we exist.
